The Thomas J. Sullivan Center’s resource library serves as a communal gathering space to foster a group learning environment for critical skills:

Life Skills: Training focuses on independent living including budgeting, cooking, nutrition and menu planning; money management, household cleaning and expenses, laundry, gardening, writing and reading skills, decision-making, organizational skills, scheduling and time management – as well as a variety of leisure skills from how to build a social network to obtaining a driver’s license to public transportation training.  Developed to support individuals who cannot or do not wish to work 5 days per week, Life Skills training offers part-time employment opportunities along with community inclusion experiences.  Examples: cooking, banking, public transportation, computer/office skills, and socialization.  Community outings include: going out to lunch, utilizing the library, shopping, gardening and seasonal activities.  Staffing ratio is one staff to three individuals. Our program remains committed to providing individuals with everyday life skills including time management, cooking, budgeting and banking, grooming and hygiene.

Social Skills: Training focuses on interpersonal relationships developed through peer interaction, the recognition of social cues, showing compassion for others, and confidence-building activities using real life experiences along with discussion and problem-solving.

Vocational Skills:  Training focuses on the ability to acquire and maintain employment skills needed to enter the world of work, including all aspects of an individual’s employment – from the application and interview through vocational assessment and hands-on job trials.  Basic computer skills, building a resume, conducting mock interviews … all of these skills are taught in order to provide the crucial tools necessary to acquire critical computer and office skills.
