Tom Sullivan began his 40 year career as a
direct care worker at Southbury Training School in 1967 after graduating
from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore Maryland. This was
the beginning of a long career with the State of Connecticut, Department
of Mental Retardation where he also served as a Special Education Teacher;
Supervisor; Program Manager; Superintendent of Seaside Regional Center in
Waterford; and Regional Director of the Northeast Region (Region 3) and
the Eastern Region. He also worked in the State of Florida from 1975 to
1978 where he served as Superintendent of the Sunland Center in Miami, and
the State of Tennessee where he was Commissioner of Mental Retardation
Services from 1996 through 1999.
In recent years he has served in the non-profit sector as a Regional
Manager for Sunrise Community; Executive Director of the United Cerebral
Palsy Association of Greater Hartford and since April 2002, Executive
Director of The Arc of New London County.
Tom has been active in a number of a number of community and civic
organizations including the CCPA Board of Directors; the Rotary Clubs of
Waterford and Montville where he served as President of both
organizations; Connecticut Special Olympics where he served on the Board
of Directors for 10 years and Chairman for 3 years; and several other
organizations.
