Its not too late to make your tax
deductible donation for 2007.
“The New London County Association
for the Help of Retarded Children was organized on March 12, 1952 at the
home of Mrs. Louis Winchell of 40 Latham St., Groton, CT.”
This is the first entry in the neatly hand-written journal
of minutes for what today is The Arc of New London County. Later in the
minutes it is noted that “…a donation was taken
to be used as an operating fund in the amount of $10.69.”
June 2007
Dear Families and Friends,
As we begin our 55th continuous
year of service as an Arc, we need to take time to thank and recognize the
courageous parents who, in 1952, had the vision and foresight to advocate
for their children so that they could live, learn, recreate and work in
their home schools and communities. Today our Board of Directors consists
of 13 volunteers who are family members, professionals, consumers,
business owners and advocates. Although we have experienced tremendous
growth over the past 55 years, this dedicated group of volunteers still
upholds the vision and zeal of our founding families. At the April 2007
meeting of the Board of Directors, we were reviewing the financial
statement and three of our very popular programs were running in the
red…Recreation, Respite and Camp Harkness. One of our Board members,
Karen DiSaia, articulated how important and critical these programs are
for families. She referred to them as “Life Savers!”

This comment from the mother of a young
adult captured everyone’s attention. Facing this challenge, The Board of
Directors recommitted itself to aggressively focus all our fund-raising
initiatives to support these programs that are so important and meaningful
to families and individuals. Therefore, all of the proceeds of this
year’s Fourth Annual Appeal and other fund raising activities this year
will be used to support the Recreation, Respite and Camp
Harkness Programs.
Last year, our Board established an
Endowment Fund that would ensure the long term support of The Arc. Several
of you responded positively as Founding Members. Anyone wishing to be a
Founding Member of this Endowment Fund can do so with a donation of $100
or more to the Annual Appeal.
Let us honor the legacy of our founding families by
ensuring that these important services continue to support the individuals
and families of our area communities. And…thank you in advance for being
a Life Saver!
